The US Congress enacted and President Obama signed into law a bill that will greatly impact the cigar industry. This bill is a $35 billion expansion of the SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) to be funded entirely by tobacco taxes. Included in this legislation is a significant tax increase on cigars and pipe tobaccos. This increase is effective April 1, 2009.
What does this mean to you?
The result of this is an increase in the wholesale cost of large cigars and pipe tobacco. While many retailers will likely add a mark-up to this tax before passing it on to their customers, we at the Bull & Bear have elected not to do this; we will only pass it through as it is. No one likes to pay more taxes and we're doing what we can to minimize the impact to our customers.
